Choosing a country Telegram will accept
Telegram is the strictest mainstream service about virtual numbers — it rejects whole cheap ranges with a 'this number cannot be used' error before any SMS is sent. If that happens no code will ever arrive on that number, so cancel and switch country rather than waiting. Mid-priced European and Southeast Asian ranges confirm noticeably better than the cheapest pools.

Protecting the account afterwards
A temporary number is released after the activation, so an account left with only that number is lost the moment Telegram re-requests an SMS. Immediately after signup set a cloud password under Settings, Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification. With it you log in on any new device with the password, and the released number no longer matters.
For channels or groups you cannot afford to lose, do not make a temporary-number account the sole admin — add a second admin on a number you control.
